After falling down a black hole, she enters a room and says “curiouser and curiouser”. In the beginning of the movie, Alice spots a rabbit in a suit and decides to follow him. (We could ignore the fact that she falls asleep during a history lesson.) A girl should be able to use her imagination and find her own way in an obstacle. Her role sends a positive message to little girls: a girl shouldn’t only be concerned with boys and clothes. She isn’t afraid to discover Wonderland, even though she doesn’t know where it will take her. Instead of being locked in a castle, waiting for her “prince charming”, Alice goes on a journey in her own mind and explores her imagination. I think these are characteristics all children should have. She’s brave and curious about everything around her. She wants to escape reality and live in a Wonderland. Alice, on the other hand, does imagine a world of her own. Disney girls are “always ready for, longing for, hoping and dreaming for a man…they ‘want to be part of his world’, not create their own world” (Packaging Girlhood, p. Alice is not the typical Disney princess. She is between the age of ten and twelve, a bit younger than most female Disney characters. We all know Alice is a beautiful blond girl who explores Wonderland in her dreams. Alice in Wonderland contains a number of emphasized gender roles and hidden messages, both good and bad. Nonetheless, no Disney film would be complete without a few stereotypical characters and subliminal messages. The film is still filled with a bunch of nonsense and imagination that makes it unique among other Disney films. Chapters from the original story, such as A Caucus Race and a Long Tale, The Rabbit Sends in a Little Bill, Pig and Pepper, and The Mock Turtle’s Story, were completely dismissed in the film (SparkNotes, n.d.). But Walt Disney chose to make the history lesson the opening scene to “give more coherence to all that follows” (Walt Disney, 1951). In the original story, Alice is reading a book over her sister’s shoulder, and the history lesson comes up in the Caucus Race. In an interview, Walt Disney explains why he “combined a few characters, rearranged some dialogue, and condensed some dialogue” (Walt Disney, 1951). The movie was produced by Walt Disney in 1951 (Boeder, n.d.). In my opinion, it differs from most Disney films because of its strange characters and plot line. Therefore, her role (and the roles of the others) in the movie impact the way children perceive the real world.Īlice in Wonderland is one of my favorite Disney films. A little girl watching Alice in Wonderland may want to be like Alice. Viewers that watch Disney movies wouldn’t notice these things initially however, they’re important because they affect the way children perceive their own worlds. While I watched the movie, I realized a number of scenes include stereotypes and hidden messages. Before I analyze a few scenes, I mention a number of differences between the original story and the Disney film.
